5D4N Tour of Mao Xian, Jiuzhaigou, and Chengdu, with Visit to Mounigou Valley and Jiuzhaigou Valley

Sichuan, also known by its romanisation moniker of Szechuan acquired its name (meaning ‘four rivers’) from the profusion of waterways that run through its valleys and gorges. A major player of the Shang Dynasty, the province is thought to have its origins in the ancient city of the Shu Kingdom, developing from its humble ninth century predecessor into the military and agriculture force that it is today. A basin collecting water from the Himalayas, Qinling Range, and Yunnan, the foggy region separates itself into Aba and Ganzi Prefecture, along with South Sichuan, and East Sichuan.

  • Springing out of a lake into a rush of water, the 306 feet tall Zhaga Waterfall thunders forebodingly within Mounigou Valley, unravelling rapids hurrying over a descend of rocky boulders towards its coppery base. The dale opens up into Erdaohai, where a lake bearing its name scintillates by means of pellucid waters, with an inky gradient providing visual hints of its true depth. Glittering caverns and grottos lure creatures out of the light, their serpentine stalagmites and stalagmites crystallising into elaborate structures sculpted by nature. Not to be outdone by its surroundings, the limpid green surface of Flower Lake undergoes a seasonal metamorphosis, as the sheath of blossoms that cover it change colours periodically.
  • Making its bed on one of the loftiest plateaus in the world, Jiuzhaigou Valley entwines natural wonders with threads of devotion, with many of its scenic charms considered holy sites by the local Tibetans and Qiang people. Once almost stripped of its beauty due to unrestrained logging activities, the expanse was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and a World Biosphere Reserve only five years later. Its topography comprises mainly of elevated karsts formed by glacial, tectonic, and hydrological means; with three large couloirs forming a catchment area for the local population. Home to the Jialing River (an offshoot of the Yangtze), the vale is most beloved for its multitude of shimmering turquoise and emerald lakes, including the famous Five Flower Lake, Mirror Lake, and Long Lake; while undulating mountains lurk in the background, covered by a pall of viridian trees and bamboo forests. Two of China’s most endangered species – the Giant Panda and Sichuan Snub-Nosed Monkey – call the park their abode, along with more than 140 recorded species of birds.
  • Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, Chengdu’s Wide and Narrow Lanes personify the city’s heritage, the two parallel streets containing a plethora of architectural nods from the past, alongside a jumble of modern stores, bars, and restaurants. With a sister triplet in Well Alley, Sichuan customs and cuisine are retained in the broader of the two roads, while the more tapered path accommodates up-to-date outlets and entertainment centres where Chengdu’s fashionable crowd is said to gather.
