Manjung, Perak: What to see and do

The gateway to the famed island of Pangkor, the southwestern hosts of Lumut and Sitiawan are the smaller towns to the seat of Seri Manjung. Formerly a member of the British colony’s Straits Settlement that includes Penang, Malacca, and Singapore, the district rejoined the state’s governance after a decade under the Crown’s rule, and is now currently declared as Perak’s tourism and maritime town. Connecting its visitors to the various parts of Pangkor, the fishing town of Lumut is the home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy, as well as the island visitors’ stop for dried seafood and a bite next to the panorama of the Lumut Waterfront.

As you venture further inland, prepare your bellies for a walking tour of the local delicacies of Sitiawan. A souvenir-shopper’s dream for dessert that are made for the people back home, the Foochow town is known to fill the Perak traveller’s bags with packs of gong pian. A type of dry biscuit made with slightly salted fried onions (or in other regions, sweet char siew), the freshly-made and hand-kneaded pastries are best consumed fresh out of the oven. Then, explore the other side of town on the road of Jalan Lumut as you seek the mobile stall standing before the Maha Mariamman temple. Lovingly called ‘James Cendol’ by the locals, the four-decade-old business’ shaved ice dessert has been compared to its Penang and Malacca equivalent, and demonstrates its popularity by selling out as early as four in the evening.
